The BC Children’s Hospital’s BioBank was unveiled at a recognition event held at the Children and Family Research Institute at the BC Children’s Hospital on November 4, 2014. This BioBank is the first institutional pediatric BioBank in Canada. The BioBank is a collection of biological samples that is stored in an environment which preserves them for future study. Member scientists are able to seek permission to withdraw samples from the bank to perform their research. This has helped to improve the lives of children suffering from debilitating and life-limiting diseases.

A significant portion of the funding for the BioBank came from Mining for Miracles in a multi-year campaign lasting from 2013 through 2014. Over the course of these two years, Mining for Miracles raised a total of $2.66 million dollars for the opening of the BioBank facility at the Children’s Hospital. Director of the BC Children’s Hospital BioBank Dr. Suzanne Vercauteren said at the time that, “without the generosity of the mining industry, we would not be able to set up this new and incredibly important facility at the BC Children’s Hospital.”
